A Visit to the Arizona Railway Museum

On Saturday, October 15th, 2017, I went to the Arizona Railway Museum in Chandler, Arizona because I had heard they've got a new locomotive, passenger car, and a freight car.

This boxcar was used to haul either express mail or baggage for AMTRAK.  Currently, it can be seen at the Arizona Railway Museum in Chandler, Arizona.

Arizona Republic Rail Car Mover

Arizona Republic Marmon Transmotive Company Model 9000 Rail Car Mover

Built by Marmon Transmotive Company as a Model 9000 for the Arizona Republic newspaper.  It was used at the Arizona Republic newspaper printing facility in Mesa, AZ until 2006 when it was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum.

ATSF Business (Passenger) Car #56

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Business (Passenger) Car #56

Built in 1923 by Pullman as a Business Car.  It was built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (ATSF).  The ATSF numbered the car ATSF #34.  Later, the car was renumbered ATSF #56.  When the car was retired, it passed through many owners until being donated to the Arizona Railway Museum in 2016.

Built in 1927 by Pullman as a Business Car.  It was built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (ATSF).  The ATSF used it until 1966 when it was removed from service.  In 1968, it was sold to San Angelo Tank Car Line Inc. of San Angelo, Texas.  In 2008, it was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Caboose #999741

Built in 1978 by the International Car Company for the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway (TPW).  In 1986, the TPW was taken over by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) and the caboose became ATSF #999741.  The ATSF used the caboose primarily at their Mobest Yard in Phoenix, Arizona.  The caboose was retired in 1992 and was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Coach (Passenger) Car #2870

Built by Pullman for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF).  It served on the El Capitan.  In 1971, it became part of AMTRAK.  In 1976, it was retired and sold to the Pullman Pizzeria of Las Cruces, New Mexico.  Later, it was sold to a private owner, who in 1990 donated it to the Arizona Railway Museum.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Lounge (Passenger) Car "Regal Phoenix"

Built by the Budd Company as a coach for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF).  In 1971, it became part of AMTRAK.  In 1977, it was retired and sold to the United States Air Force (USAF).  The USAF was going to rebuild the car into a hospitality car, but that was never done.  Instead, it was sold to a private owner in 1990.  Three years later, it was sold to Rail Preservation Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona which later gave the car to the Arizona Railway Museum in 1996.  The museum has since rebuilt the car into a lounge.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Observation (Passenger) Car "Denehotso"

Built in 1948 by the Pullman Company as a rear end observation car for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF).  In 1968, the car was retired and was donated to the Steamtown Foundation in Bellows Falls, Vermont.  Later, the Steamtown Foundation moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania and some of their equipment had to be sold.  The car was sold and passed through two owners before being purchased by the Arizona Railway Museum in 1995.

Built in 1947 by the Pullman Company as a rear end observation car for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF).

ATSF Sleeper (Passenger) Car Verde Valley

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Sleeper (Passenger) Car "Verde Valley"

Built in 1942 by the Pullman Company for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.   In 1968, the car was retired and in 1969 it was donated to the Gulf Coast Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.  In 2015, the Gulf Coast Chapter donated the car to the Arizona Railway Museum and arrived at the museum on August 28, 2017.

Rock Island Business (Passenger) Car Jane Marie

Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad Sleeper/Lounge (Passenger) Car "Jane Marie"

Built in 1947 by the Pullman Company as a coach for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad.  It was retired in the early 1980s and passed through many owners until 1988 when it was bought by the current owner.  The owner has since converted the car into a Sleeper/Lounge.

Built in 1938 for the John H. Grace Company.  It was acquired in the 1990s by the Arizona Railway Museum from Valley Steel Supply.

Kennecott Copper Company General Electri

Kennecott Copper Company General Electric 35-Ton Diesel Locomotive #801

Built in September 1957 by General Electric as a 35-Ton Diesel Locomotive.  It was built for the Kennecott Copper Corporation (KCC) and numbered KCC 801.  KCC 801 was used at the Hayden, Arizona, Smelter for slag disposal service.  In the mid-1970s, KCC 801 was rebuilt and painted in Bicentennial colors for America's 200th birthday.  When KCC sold the Ray Mines Division to ASARCO, the locomotive was moved to the close by ASARCO smelter in Hayden.  In 2017, the Copper Basin Railroad took possession of the locomotive and later that same year donated it to the Arizona Railway Museum in Chandler, Arizona.

Believed to have been built in the 1920s.  It was acquired by the Kennecott Copper Corporation (KCC).  In 2015, it was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum in Chandler, Arizona.

Private Owner Electro-Motive Diesel E-8A Diesel Locomotive #97

Built in 1950, Electro-Motive Divison of General Motors as an E-8A.  It was built for Chicago & Northwestern Railway (CNW).  The CNW numbered it #5022B.  In the mid-1960s, it was renumbered #519.  Later, #519 became part of the Regional Transportation Authority (METRA).  It was operated by METRA until 1991 when it retired.  In 1992, it was sold to Pacific Rail Dismantlers.  In 1997, it was sold to Monad Railway Equipment.  In 2006, a private Individual purchased it and had the locomotive moved to the Arizona Railway Museum for display and storage.

Silver Star Passenger Car

Private Owner Passenger Car #PPCX800744 "Silver Star"

Built in 1950 by the Budd Company as a sleeping car for the Union Pacific Railroad (UP).  The UP named the car the "Pacific Scene."  In 1971, the Pacific Scene was given to AMTRAK.  In 2002, the car was sold to private owners and named "Silver Star."  The owners have since converted it into a business car.

Built in 1911 by the Pullman Company.  The "Federal" is the oldest AMTRAK certified passenger car to operate on the rails.

Built in 1910 by the Pullman Company for the Ray & Gila Valley Railroad.  In 2007, it was donated by the Copper Basin Railroad to the Arizona Railway Museum in Chandler, Arizona.

FRISCO Sleeper (Passenger) Car #6769

Saint Louis-San Francisco Railroad Sleeper (Passenger) Car #6769 "Eugene Field"

Built by the Pullman Company in 1948 as a sleeper (passenger) car.  Delivered to the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway (FRISCO) in July 1948.  In 1967, the car was sold to the NORD Corporation.  The NORD Corporation reconstructed the car into a rail traveling showroom for their photographic products.  Later, the car was donated to Rail Road Enthusiasts, who eventually sold the car to a group of three friends.  The friends, upgraded the car and brought it back to a sleeper (passenger) car.  In 2010, the car was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum.

San Manuel Arizona Railroad Rider Car #184

Built in 1955 by MAGOR for the San Manuel Arizona Railroad.  It was used for many years, then later it was retired and placed in a vacant field next to the San Manuel Arizona Railroad's tracks.  In September 2017, it was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum and arrived at the museum by rail on   September 25, 2017.

Southern Pacific Railroad 2-8-0 Consolidation Steam Locomotive #2562

Built in 1906 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a C-9 class 2-8-0 Consolidation for the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP).  The SP ran the locomotive on many of their lines until 1956 when it was retired from regular service.  August 2, 1956, the SP donated the locomotive to the City of Chandler, Arizona.  The locomotive arrived at Chandler on August 16, 1956.  For 27 years, the locomotive sat in front of the site of the former Chandler Train Station deteriorating.  In late 1983, the Arizona Railway Museum was formed and the old locomotive was restored.  Now the locomotive can be seen at the Arizona Railway Museum's location at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler, AZ.

Built in 1947 by the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) for their subsidiary Texas and New Orleans Railroad (TNO).  It was number TNO #512.  In 1961, the TNO merged in with the Southern Pacific Railroad and the caboose became SP #413.  In 1982, the SP retired and donated the caboose to the Arizona Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS).  In 1994, the Arizona Chapter of the NRHS donated the car to the Arizona Railway Museum.

Built in 1978 by the International Car Company for the Southern Pacific Railroad.  It was used by the railroad until 1996 when it was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum.

Built in 1910 by the Bay City Industrial Works for the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP).  The SP used the Derrick until 1989 when it was decommissioned and was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum.

Southern Railway Business (Passenger) Car #16 "Desert Valley"

Built in 1879 by the Pullman Company for the South Carolina Railroad.  In 1899, the South Carolina Railroad became part of the Southern Railway System and the car was renumbered several times;  Its last Southern Railway number was #16.  In 1967, #16 was retired and passed through many owners before being donated to the Arizona Railway Museum in 1995.

Southwest Forest Industries Log Car #511

Built between 1917 and 1920 by Bettendorf for a predecessor of the Southwest Forest Industries.  After years of service the car was retired and placed on display in Flagstaff, Arizona.  In 1999, the City of Flagstaff donated the car to the Arizona Railway Museum.

Union Tank Car Company Tank Car #7862

Built in 1936 by the Union Tank Car Company (UTLX).  During the early 1970s the car was sold to Protex Industries of Denver, Colorado.  In 1995, Protex Industries sold the car for scrap to Busby Metals of Mesa, Arizona, who donated the car to the Arizona Railway Museum.

United States Army Rail Crane #C-45

United States Army Rail Crane #C-45

Built in 1943 by the American Hoist and Derrick Company for the United States Army.  It was used at the Navajo Army Depot in Bellemont, Arizona.  Later it was sold to the Valley Steel and Supply Company of Tempe, AZ.  In 1996, the crane was donated to the Arizona Railway Museum.
